Los Haitises National Park Tour
Explore ancient caves, mangroves, and stunning karst formations
Overview
Los Haitises is unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. The park's signature mogotes -- cone-shaped limestone hills draped in tropical forest -- rise straight out of the water like a scene from another continent. Between them, a labyrinth of mangrove channels shelters frigatebirds, brown pelicans, and the critically endangered Ridgway's hawk. Underground, a network of caves preserves ceremonial art left by the Taino people long before Columbus arrived. This full-day expedition pairs raw natural beauty with deep cultural history.
- Walk into cave chambers decorated with Taino pictographs dating back centuries
- Glide by boat through silent mangrove corridors where herons and pelicans nest
- Photograph the iconic mogotes -- jungle-topped limestone towers that erupt from the bay
Itinerary
Relax in your air-conditioned vehicle as you travel through the Dominican countryside toward the Samana coast and the park's embarkation point.
Board a small boat and weave through winding mangrove waterways. Your guide points out nesting birds, juvenile fish nurseries, and the tangled root systems that protect the coast.
Step inside Cueva de la Arena and Cueva de la Linea. Flashlights reveal spectacular stalactite curtains and ancient Taino drawings etched into the rock walls.
Cruise past the park's most dramatic karst pillars. Binoculars at the ready -- frigate birds, herons, and hawks are commonly spotted overhead.
Tuck into a home-style Dominican lunch at a waterfront stop. There is time to stretch your legs, take photos, and soak in the scenery.
Board your vehicle for the scenic drive back to Punta Cana, arriving in the late afternoon.

What to Bring
Frequently Asked Questions
Which months offer the best conditions?
The park is open year-round. The dry season (December through April) generally means calmer seas and clearer skies, but the lush green of the wet season has its own charm.
Can young children join this tour?
Yes. The caves involve short, level walks and the boat rides are calm. Life jackets are provided for everyone. We recommend the trip for ages 4 and up.
Is swimming part of the itinerary?
The tour focuses on caves and wildlife, so swimming is not scheduled. You may get your feet wet boarding boats, though, so waterproof footwear is a good idea.
What birds and animals can I expect?
The park hosts over 200 bird species. Common sightings include brown pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, great blue herons, and the endemic Ridgway's hawk. Manatees and dolphins occasionally appear in the bay.
