Overview

Every January through March, Samana Bay welcomes thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales. This combo tour puts you on a whale-watching boat for two to three hours of observation, then transfers you to Cayo Levantado -- the tiny, palm-covered island famous from the Bacardi rum adverts. You will enjoy a buffet lunch, swim in calm turquoise water, and lounge on some of the whitest sand in the Caribbean before the drive home. It is a long day, but guests consistently rate it as the highlight of their trip.

  • Observe humpback whales up close as they breach, sing, and nurse calves in the bay
  • Step onto Cayo Levantado -- the postcard island that made the Bacardi ads famous
  • Onboard marine guide explains whale migration, songs, and social behaviour
  • Relax on a palm-shaded beach with a Dominican buffet lunch
  • An ideal blend of wildlife spectacle and tropical downtime

Frequently Asked Questions

When can we see whales?

Humpbacks are present from mid-January through late March. During this window, sighting success exceeds 98 percent.

What happens outside whale season?

From April to December the tour focuses on Cayo Levantado with additional snorkelling and extended beach activities.

Is the boat ride uncomfortable?

Samana Bay is generally sheltered and calm. If you are prone to motion sickness, preventive medication is recommended.

How close do the whales come?

Boats follow marine-protection rules on minimum distance, but humpbacks are curious and frequently approach on their own -- sometimes close enough to feel the spray from a blow.

One of the most extraordinary days of my life. A mother whale surfaced with her calf right beside the boat -- everyone went silent. Then Cayo Levantado was pure paradise. Long day, zero regrets.

The whales were phenomenal -- we saw breaches, tail slaps, and a nursing pair. The island was the perfect wind-down afterwards. Our trilingual guide was passionate and charismatic. A masterpiece of a tour.
